• Documents You'll Need

  To apply for a new medical window tint exemption in New Jersey, you'll need:

  • Form MVC Sunscreening 1 (Application for Sunscreening Exemption), with Step 4 completed and signed by your physician
  • A valid prescription from your physician requesting sun screening
  • Vehicle information including make, model, year, registration plate number, and VIN

  The Medical Certification must be completed by one of the following:

  • Certified ophthalmologist licensed in New Jersey or a bordering state
  • Physician with a plenary license to practice medicine and surgery in New Jersey or a bordering state (NY, PA, DE)

• Legal Tint Limits

  New Jersey has strict window tint laws that prohibit any tint on the windshield and front side windows for most vehicles. However, with an approved medical exemption, you can legally install darker tint on these windows, protecting both your health and ensuring compliance with New Jersey law.

  Standard New Jersey Tint Limits (Without Exemption):

  • Windshield: No tint allowed (except factory-installed above AS-1 line).
